Laneys!

We ran into John and Julie Laney at Fitzgerald's craft fair last weekend, and invited them over for this past Saturday night--it had been a year and a half or more since we saw them last.

It rained up until about a half-hour before they arrived, but then cleared off for the rest of the evening. We played a little ladder ball, and had portobello mushroom sandwiches with baked beans and asparagus, and a strawberry sorbet pie that Lori made.

Sunday Afternoon

We got up and went right out to the nursery at the Home Depot for our final (I hope) planting this summer. On the way back we stopped for brunch at the Wishbone and went to the craft fair at Fitzgerald's. Our friends Mandy and Eric had a booth there.

Once home, I set up the tables in the garage due to threatening weather, and Lori got to work potting, while I carried pots and window boxes out to the front porch.

I think the house is now fully summerized!

Saturday Night

Glenn and Marlis were over for dinner and Quiddler. I made andouille sausage dogs on French rolls with a cooked Cajun relish of celery, onion, bell pepper, garlic and spices. Lori made a new potato salad, and we also had grilled asparagus. After Quiddler, which I once again manged to lose handily, we had Lori's rhubarb-strawberry pie with ice cream or cool whip.

I also learned that I can use my new portable gas grill indoors without us all being asphixiated!

Memorial Day Weekend - The End

Tuesday we took off for home, catching the 11:10 ferry off the island. The weather held, and we had a great travel day.

We stopped at the rest area south of Big Rapids--the one where Mom and Dad used to meet us to pick up the kids for a week on the island. We sat at the picnic table where we would eat the lunch Mom would bring. It was kind of a wistful moment.

Finally, around 7:00 p.m., home sweet home Chicago.

Our next trip: July 4th weekend to Excelsior Springs and Kansas City for Linda and Vince's wedding, at which the Rev. Dr. Gregory J. Pulliam will officiate.

On our last evening, the Roggows came over for a Memorial Day barbecue.

We had steaks, potato salad, asparagus, broiled veggies, crusty bread, and a banana dessert.

All this after drinks, chips and guacamole, cheeses and crackers and popcorn.
