Wait, Wait! Don't Tell Me!

No pix on this one, but for our birthdays, Lori's mom Bonnie got us tickets to the taping of this NPR show on Thursday evening, September 18th. We ate a light supper downtown, then walked to the auditorium. The show, which neither of us had ever heard, is a very funny weekly current events quiz show (check your local listings). This taping also featured a live special guest: Leonard Nimoy! And it turned out two of the participants in the show were serious Trek fans. You can listen to this episode or download the podcast here.

I've often wondered what I would say to a major Star Trek actor like Nimoy should I ever actually get to meet and talk with him for a few minutes. This did not happen on that night, but I did finally figure it out.

I'd tell him this true story: I first became really aware of Star Trek in 1977 when I took a course (for my Communication and Rhetoric major at Memphis State) called TV Programming. In this class, the communication professor showed us Star Trek episodes, had us read three books about the making and cancellation of Star Trek for and by NBC in the 1960's, and then we talked about Star Trek--that was the course. At least partially because of this experience, I went on to become--

--a communication professor.
